X prohibits users from sharing links to Signal

Elon Musk has been targeting federal employees and organizations through the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE). Now, Musk’s company X (formerly Twitter) is blocking links to Signal.me, the URL used by Signal’s encrypted messaging service that allows people to quickly connect with others directly, according to the Disruptionist blog. Federal employees used Signal to secretly report important and dangerous activities.

Anyone who tries to post a Signal.me link in a DM, public post, or on their profile page receives an error message like: “This request looks like it might be automated. To protect our users from spam and other malicious activity, we are unable to perform this action at this time. Please try again later.” Other responses include: “We are unable to honor this request because this link has been identified by X or our partners as potentially harmful.”

Users who try to follow existing Signal.me links receive a message: “Warning: This link may not be safe. The link you are attempting to follow has been identified as potentially spammy or unsafe by Company X or our partners, in accordance with Company X’s URL Policy.” They can ignore the warning and follow the link.

Elon Musk is working with President Trump on a widespread layoff of federal employees. On Friday, February 14, more than 9,500 employees were laid off.
