X announced on Thursday that it is launching an experiment that will allow it to recognize posts that are liked by people who normally disagree with them. The experiment utilizes the crowdsourced Community Notes feature, which is currently used when content is flagged as misleading or incorrect.
Starting on Thursday, some contributors to Community Notes will see calls to rate and review certain posts. The prompt will be displayed based on the post’s initial like activity.
X says this feedback will help develop an open-source algorithm that can identify posts that appeal to people with different views.
Followers will be asked to share what they like and dislike about the post. They will be able to choose options such as “I learned something interesting” or “I disagree with this” when giving feedback.
“People often feel that the world is divided, but Community Notes shows that people can come to agreement, even on controversial topics,” X wrote in his post. “This experimental new feature aims to identify ideas, views, and opinions that unite points of view. It can draw attention to something that has a broad resonance. It can motivate people to share those ideas in the first place. Ultimately, it can help move the world forward in the way that people want it to.”
X launched Community Notes in 2022 after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social network, as it moved away from traditional fact-checking. The feature has since been taken over by Facebook, Instagram, and Meta-owned Threads.
