In a move that redefines modern warfare, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, with strategic support from the United Kingdom, has officially launched Defense AI Center «A1». This is the first in a planned network of specialized competence centers aimed at building the most effective, AI-driven defense system in Europe.
What is Defense AI Center «A1»?
The “A1” center is designed to be the technological “brain” of the MoD. While the UK provides funding and NATO-standard methodologies, Ukraine provides the world’s most valuable asset: real-time combat data.
The Four Pillars of “A1” Operations:
-
Combat Data Analysis: Processing millions of hours of drone footage and SIGINT (signals intelligence) to identify enemy patterns.
-
Predictive Modeling: Using AI to forecast enemy maneuvers before they happen.
-
Autonomous Systems: Developing “GPS-free” and operator-independent algorithms for drones and robotic platforms.
-
C2 Tools (Command & Control): Intelligent decision-support systems that help commanders make split-second choices on the battlefield.

A Network of Excellence: Beyond AI
Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov announced that “A1” is just the beginning. The MoD is establishing a specialized network where each center focuses on a specific “kill chain” domain:
-
Drone Center: UAVs and ground robotics.
-
Middle Strike: Mid-range precision strikes.
-
Deep Strike: Long-range drones and missile tech.
-
Artillery: Automated targeting and counter-battery warfare.
The Vision: “Network Superiority”
Fedorov’s strategy for the AI-driven army of 2026 rests on three principles:
-
Innovation Velocity: Moving from idea to frontline deployment in weeks, not years.
-
The DELTA Advantage: Every soldier and sensor is connected to a single, unified information environment.
-
Human-out-of-the-loop: Maximizing the use of robots and AI to pull soldiers away from the direct line of fire.
Comparison: Traditional vs. AI-Driven Army (2026)
| Feature | Conventional Military | AI-Driven Army (UA Strategy) |
| Decision Making | Hierarchical / Manual | Data-driven / AI-Assisted |
| Drone Operation | Requires 1:1 Pilot Ratio | Fully Autonomous / Swarm-based |
| Intelligence | Periodic Reports | Real-time Streaming Analytics |
| Innovation Cycle | Years (Procurement) | Weeks (Agile Dev) |
