TikTok will now show yellow alerts in the United States. If a child goes missing in your neighborhood, you will see a yellow alert directly in your “For You” feed.
In the example provided by TikTok, AMBER Alert shows a photo of the child, along with relevant details and the option to call 911. TikTok is launching the feature in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a nonprofit organization funded primarily by the U.S. government.
The app began piloting the feature in Texas last year and reported that AMBER Alerts on the platform have been viewed more than 20 million times. Despite the uncertain future in the U.S., TikTok continues to add features aimed at keeping children safe, such as asking teenage users to “unplug” after 10 p.m.
In addition to AMBER Alert’s automatic notifications sent to phones in the US, other apps have also added AMBER Alert over the years, with Uber and Waze adding them to their platforms in 2015. Facebook, Instagram, and X have also integrated missing child alerts.
