The number of Threads users has grown to 300 million

The number of users of Meta’s Threads app has grown to 300 million, with more than 100 million people using the service every day. Mark Zuckerberg announced the new milestone in a post on Threads, saying, “Threads’ powerful momentum continues.”

Zuckerberg has repeatedly suggested that Threads has a “good chance” of becoming the company’s next app with a billion users. Although this goal is still quite far away, its growth seems to be accelerating. Last fall, the number of users of the app reached 100 million, and in early November, it reached 275 million. In addition, Apple revealed that Threads became the second most downloaded app in 2024, behind only the shopping app Temu, which took the top spot in Apple’s ranking.

In the coming weeks, Threads could see some major changes as Meta looks to capitalize on this growth. The company reportedly plans to start experimenting with the first ads for Threads in early 2025, according to a recent report in The Information.

Threads isn’t the only app trying to reclaim the “public square” as some longtime users are leaving the platform now known as X. Bluesky has also seen significant growth recently. In November, the decentralized service nearly doubled its user base and now has just over 25 million users. (The company has never disclosed how many of its users visit the site on a daily basis.) Although Meta is still much smaller than Threads, it appears to have taken inspiration from some of Bluesky’s signature features in recent weeks, including starter packs and custom feeds.
