It’s been a few years since Apple first introduced the AirTag, and while the tracker has undoubtedly become a useful everyday tool for many customers, concerns – and even a class action lawsuit – have surfaced about the misuse of the device as reports of AirTag stalking have surfaced. With all of this in mind, Apple is reportedly planning to implement some privacy improvements in its next AirTag. In particular, it will be more secure against unauthorized access, reports Mark Gurman in this week’s Power On newsletter.
The second generation of the AirTag, which Gurman says is expected in the middle of next year, will be made in such a way that it is more difficult to remove, he writes. Apple has implemented features to limit unwanted tracking, including audible alerts that let a person know that an unknown AirTag is in their vicinity, but it is still relatively easy to remove the speaker, making it less noticeable. According to Gurman, in addition to improving privacy, the new AirTag will also increase the range and improve the built-in wireless chip. But it shouldn’t look much different from the AirTag we’re used to.
