Red Magic 9 Pro series with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC launched

Red Magic has just launched gaming smartphones of the Red Magic 9 Pro series in China. The lineup consists of two models: Red Magic 9 Pro and Red Magic 9 Pro+. Here is a detailed overview of the specifications and features of these smartphones.

Design and display

The Red Magic 9 Pro series is said to be the perfect candy-colored phone. They have a completely flat back and a full-screen display, which means there is no camera notch on the back and no front camera notch on the screen. The camera setup on these devices is protected by a layer of specially made glass that does not block light from reaching the sensors.

The 8.9 mm thick series of smartphones is available in three color options: Dark Knight, Deuterium Front Transparent Dark Night and Deuterium Front Transparent Silver Wings.

In front, the devices are equipped with a 6.8-inch full-screen AMOLED display with a resolution of 2480 x 1116 pixels. The screen-to-body ratio is an impressive 93.7%. They have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, ultra-high-frequency PWM dimming of 2160 Hz + constant dimming, multi-touch sampling rate of 960 Hz and peak brightness of 1600 nits. The display fully covers the DCI-P3 color gamut and supports HDR10+. As mentioned above, these phones feature a camera below the display, which is covered with BOE Q9+ luminescent material that masks the camera below the display.

Performance and specifications

Under the hood, the Red Magic 9 Pro (and 9 Pro+) features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS4.0 storage. It includes a 10,182 mm² vapor chamber, a new alloy fan + waterfall airflow, and a CUBE energy engine that is said to reduce the heat generated by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip by 25°C. Thanks to this cooling system, the phone has achieved impressive AnTuTu results of 2,291,328 points at room temperature and 2,321,054 points in the lab. The brand claims that the phone can easily maintain 60 frames per second in Genshin Impact for 60 minutes.

The device hints that it has Red Magic’s proprietary gaming chip, known as Red Core R2 Pro. This chip is designed to enhance the gaming experience by improving features such as haptic feedback, audio, and touch sampling rate.

In terms of software, the Red Magic 9 Pro series comes with REDMAGIC OS 9.0 based on Android 14. A key feature of the new OS is the X Gravity 2.0 software, which will be used to seamlessly map external devices such as a controller or keyboard and mouse to on-screen controls.

Red Magic 9 Pro is equipped with a 6500 mAh battery + 80W fast charger that can fully charge the device in just 35 minutes. The Red Magic 9 Pro+, on the other hand, is equipped with a 5500 mAh battery + 165W ultra-fast charger that can fully charge in just 16 minutes. Both models support USB 3.2 gen2 and full-featured TYPE-C.

Other features on board include 520Hz touch-sensitive shoulder buttons for gaming, dual Magic Sound stereo speakers, 3 built-in microphones, Wi-Fi 7, IR remote control, 3.5mm headphone jack, and NFC.

Camera

As for the cameras, the main 50-megapixel Samsung GN5 camera is equipped with OIS. Instead of the previous 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor, the Red Magic 9 Pro series is equipped with a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle JN1 sensor. Interestingly, for some reason, the kit also includes a 2-megapixel macro lens.
