PlayStation introduces a new joystick for fighting games

PlayStation has announced Project Defiant, an arcade-style fighting stick that looks to be a perfect fit for the recently announced Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection. Sony showed off the device during its State of Play presentation on Wednesday, and then revealed more details in a blog post, which states that the controller will be able to connect wirelessly to a PS5 or PC using PlayStation Link technology.

Sony claims that PlayStation Link offers an “ultra-low latency” connection that allows for precise response to button presses and joystick movements. It is also possible to connect the controller to your device using a USB-C cable.

The controller comes with a digital joystick custom designed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, as well as mechanical toggle buttons, a touchpad similar to the one on the DualSense wireless controller, and interchangeable sticks (square, circle, and octagon) for the joystick.

The Project Defiant comes with a carrying case with a gap between the levers “to keep the digital joystick safe during transportation.” Sony plans to release the controller in 2026 and will share more information about the device, including its official name, in the “coming months.”
