Whether you like it or not, Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence is making its way into more and more applications in your workspace. At I/O 2025, the company’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced that a new feature called “Personalized Smart Replies” will be coming to the upcoming Gmail app. The idea is that, with your permission, Gemini can study your past emails and Google Docs and then help you create responses to personal or business emails.
In his I/O keynote, Pichai gave an example of a friend of his going on a trip across Colorado to Utah that the friend knew Pichai had traveled on before. Gemini can look at all the notes in Drive, search email for related reservations, and find the itinerary in Google Docs. It will combine all of this together and then create a draft email that matches the typical tone, style, and even words that Pichai usually uses.
Google also wants to help you better manage your email with a new inbox cleanup feature. “Simply tell Gemini what you want to do (e.g., ‘delete all my unread emails from [a certain company] from the past year’) and watch it help you manage and clean up your inbox in one click.” Another new feature is integrated quick appointment scheduling, which allows you to offer clients booking times directly from Gmail.
All of these new features will be available to Google Workspace subscribers this summer. While they may prove useful to many users, some feel that Google’s addition of the new Gemini features is intrusive and unwanted.
