After a preview earlier this year, Sora, the long-awaited video generation model from OpenAI, is ready for public use. If you’re a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscriber in the US or “most other countries” where the chatbot is available, you can start experimenting with the tool starting today, OpenAI announced on Monday. The product is powered by a more powerful model than the one OpenAI demonstrated in February. According to the company, Sora Turbo is significantly faster, although OpenAI warns that the new model still has limitations. “It often generates unrealistic physics and struggles with complex actions for a long time,” the company says.
When users first visit the special landing page that OpenAI created for Sora, they are greeted with a feed of videos that the model has created for other people. By clicking on a video, you can see the exact prompt that someone gave Sora to generate the video you’re seeing. From here, you can also decide to trim the video, merge it with a clip you’re working on, or remix it. In this initial version, OpenAI limits Sora to creating videos with a resolution of up to 1080p and a length of up to 20 seconds.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers can use Sora to create up to 50 480p videos per month. In addition, Plus users can create fewer (and shorter) 720p videos. OpenAI claims that the Pro plan allows you to use 10 times more resources, with higher resolution and longer duration. “We are working on individualized pricing for different types of users, which we plan to make available early next year,” the company adds.
For security purposes, each video is watermarked by default and contains C2PA metadata for easy identification. OpenAI says it will block users from using Sora to create material depicting child sexual abuse (CSAM) and sexual fakes. More broadly, the company plans to limit people’s uploads until it has time to improve its defenses against deep spoofing.
Even if you don’t have a ChatGPT subscription, you can still visit Sora’s website to see what other people are creating with the tool. During today’s livestream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that it may take some time before Sora is available in Europe and the UK.
