OpenAI will open its first office in Seoul and has set up a venture in South Korea as demand for its ChatGPT service in the country has skyrocketed, the company announced on Monday.
According to OpenAI, South Korea has the largest number of paid ChatGPT subscribers after the United States.
OpenAI has also begun hiring staff to support partnerships with the country and plans to announce further details in the coming months, the company said.
“Korea’s full-cycle AI ecosystem makes it one of the most promising markets in the world for meaningful AI impact, from silicon to software, from students to seniors,” Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon said in a statement.
Earlier this year, OpenAI announced that it would develop AI products for South Korea in conjunction with chat app operator Kakao (035720.KS).
Kwon, who is visiting Seoul, is set to meet with officials from the main opposition Democratic Party and the ruling People’s Party of the Government, local media reported.
