NHTSA launches investigation into Tesla's remote parking features

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating remote parking functions in some Tesla cars. This refers to the Smart Summon feature, which uses cameras in the car to automatically control the parking process.

The agency’s Defects Investigation Unit received 12 complaints about alleged accidents caused by Smart Summon and one complaint about Actual Smart Summon that allegedly led to an accident. It also analyzed three media reports of similar collisions involving Actual Smart Summon, in which the driver did not react in time to avoid an accident. The remote parking feature is available in approximately 2.6 million vehicles, including Model S 2016-2025, Model X 2016, Model X 2018-2025, Model 3 2019-2025, and Model Y 2019-2025.

Earlier this month, Tesla reported its first-ever drop in deliveries. The company reported 1.78 million vehicle deliveries in 2024, down from 1.81 million in 2023.
