Meta Quest encourages video calls in VR

Zoom has released a separate app for the Meta Quest headset. With this app, you can join virtual reality meetings or host them by appearing as a Meta avatar.

Zoom launched an app for Quest in 2023, but it was only available through Meta’s Horizon Workspaces app, and users could also only host meetings if they had a Zoom subscription. The new standalone Zoom app will work with “any free or paid Zoom license,” according to the description on Meta’s website. It also supports Meta’s Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest Pro, and Quest 2 headsets.

Over the past year or so, Zoom has been moving toward its goal of having AI avatars join meetings on your behalf. Last year, the video conferencing service started allowing Vision Pro users to join meetings on their own behalf, and later launched its own AI avatars that people can use to send short messages to their team.

When using Zoom on Quest, you’ll also be able to see other participants in your call, whether they’re using the service’s desktop, mobile, or web app. Meta notes that you can also join meetings using see-through mode, a feature that allows you to see parts of your real-world environment when you wear Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro headsets.
