Apple‘s head of artificial intelligence models Ruoming Pang is leaving the company to join Meta, Bloomberg reported on Monday. This is the latest senior AI executive hired by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to lead his new AI division.
According to the report, Pang previously led an internal team at Apple that developed the underlying artificial intelligence models that underpin Apple Intelligence and other AI features on devices. Apple’s artificial intelligence models have not been very successful – they are much less powerful than OpenAI, Anthropic, and even Meta. Apple has even reportedly considered using third-party AI models for a future AI-enabled Siri update.
Sources told Bloomberg that Pang’s departure could be the first of many in Apple’s troubled AI division.
Nevertheless, Pang could bring experience in developing small-scale AI models on devices to Meta, joining a host of talent that Zuckerberg has poached in recent months, including leaders from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence.
