MediaTek promises to invest $12.5 million in UK startups

In a strategic move to strengthen its presence in the UK, Taiwanese semiconductor giant MediaTek Inc. has announced a significant investment of £10 million ($12.59 million) over the next five years. The announcement, made ahead of the 2023 Global Investment Summit in London, underscores the company’s commitment to fostering innovation in the UK’s rapidly evolving startup landscape.

This investment is fully in line with the UK government’s proactive stance on attracting foreign investment, as highlighted in its recent Autumn Statement. With more than 140 Unicorn and private start-ups currently located in the UK, worth more than £1 billion each, the UK stands out as a key center of innovation in Europe. This number is higher than the combined total of Germany, France and Sweden, making the UK an attractive destination for companies looking for growth opportunities.

MediaTek, which already operates in the UK with offices in Cambridge and Kent, focusing on research and development, has strengthened its commitment to the region with a recent collaboration. The joint venture with Bullitt Group aims to pioneer two-way satellite communication technology for smartphones and other devices. Additionally, the partnership with Inmarsat plc aims to provide satellite communications services to customers, underscoring MediaTek’s commitment to cutting-edge technology.

MediaTek has consolidated its position as the fifth largest integrated circuit (IC) developer in the global market. With sales of about $3.2 billion and a market share of 8.4% in the second quarter of this year, the company continues to be an important player in the semiconductor industry.

The recent unveiling of the Dimensity 8300 chipset further reinforces MediaTek’s commitment to innovation. Positioned as a premium offering for 5G smartphones, the chipset boasts an advanced second-generation 4-nanometer process technology, promising 20% higher processor performance and 30% peak power efficiency gains over its predecessor.

The chipset is scheduled to debut in smartphones by the end of the year, which indicates MediaTek‘s intention to compete in the premium 5G smartphone market.
