History of lifecell
The history of lifecell in Ukraine dates back to 2005, when the first call was made on the network. In the same year, the operator, then known as life:), was the first to offer high-speed data transmission services based on EDGE technology.
Thanks to its technology and flexibility, lifecell has repeatedly become a driver of Ukrainian telecom and was the first to launch innovative services for Ukrainian subscribers, such as
- 2015 – life:) was the first to commercially launch 3G communication.
- 2018 – lifecell was the first to launch 4G high-speed communication in the largest number of regional centers of Ukraine.
- 2019 – the first among the Big Three to launch eSIM.
- 2020 – the first to start testing 5G.
- 2022 – the first to launch two modern voice transmission technologies – VoLTE and VoWiFi.
- 2023 – provided subscribers with access to 5G services in roaming.
lifecell today
Last year was one of the most significant on the company’s development path. It is remembered for its achievements, leadership and a new stage in its history. In particular, it merged with Datagroup and Volia, which led to the creation of a new player in the Ukrainian telecom market – DVL Group.
As part of the merged platform, the operator continued to expand its coverage, launch new products and innovative services, work to ensure the energy stability of the network and support social initiatives. In particular, in 2024-2025:
- lifecell was the first in Ukraine to use an electric car as an autonomous power source for base stations;
- won the tender for 4G communication under Lot 2, which gives the right to use 2*5 MHz radio frequencies in the 1935-1940/2125-2130 MHz bands in 25 regions of Ukraine. The acquired radio frequencies will significantly accelerate the development of services for subscribers, using an increasing variety of Internet-based services;
- launched its first converged 3-in-1 tariff with mobile, home Internet and TV services –Lifecell M
- holds the lead in the number of ported numbers – since the launch of the number portability service, more than 600 thousand subscribers have switched to lifecell from other operators.
- lifecell took care of 70 war orphans by joining the Our Kids charity initiative. The company’s monthly contribution to the needs of these children is UAH 700 thousand.
New investments
Despite the ongoing destruction and other challenges of the war, the company continues to invest in the energy resilience of the network by installing generators and new lithium batteries at base stations.
In the fall, lifecell purchased 33 thousand modern batteries to equip its network across Ukraine to achieve 10-hour autonomy of equipment operation without stationary power supply. Another 15 thousand such batteries were installed in previous years.
Since the beginning of the Great War, lifecell has built and modernized 7455 base stations across Ukraine.
