Kyivstar is preparing for possible winter blackouts

Ukrainian telecom operator Kyivstar is preparing for possible winter blackouts in advance and is providing its telecom network with diesel generators, long-life batteries and uninterruptible power supplies.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Kyivstar has invested UAH 920 million in the energy independence of its telecom networks. In particular, the national telecom operator has allocated over UAH 680 million for the autonomous operation of mobile communications and UAH 240 million for Home Internet.

The company currently uses more than 2,500 stationary and mobile diesel generators. This ensures that all key base stations, switches and critical telecom equipment have backup power. The base stations are equipped with new long-life batteries that can operate without external power for 4-6 hours. To date, the company has installed almost 37 thousand such batteries and continues to do so.

Kyivstar has also taken care of its subscribers who use the fixed high-speed Internet service – Home Internet. Thus, the company plans to protect 70% of the fixed Internet network from power outages by the end of this year. To this end, 50,000 uninterruptible power supplies will be installed for Home Internet by the end of the year. In addition, the company is working to introduce energy-efficient GPON technology. The development of the Home Internet network using this technology is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.

Kyivstar has 24 million subscribers, and more than 1 million subscribers use Home Internet services. The telecom operator is steadily developing and rebuilding its telecom network to provide its subscribers with stable and high-quality communication and data transmission services.
