We may finally see the first browsers for the iPhone based on third-party engines now that Japanese regulators have taken up the issue.
Until now, Apple’s strict adherence to EU requirements has prevented Chrome and its Blink engine, for example, from moving to iOS, but recently published recommendations related to Japan’s Smartphone Law may change that. Not only do they set a December deadline for lifting restrictions, but they also clarify that Apple cannot impose alternative rules that make it difficult to switch to alternatives to the company’s own WebKit browser engine.
