Instagram will release a feature to find common interests

Instagram is working on a feature called “Picks,” which is designed to help users find common interests. The Meta-owned social network confirmed to TechCrunch that Picks is an internal prototype and is not being tested externally.

This feature was first discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who often finds unreleased features while they are still in development.

According to screenshots posted by Paluzzi, users select their favorite movies, books, TV shows, games, and music, or their “Choices.” Instagram then finds matches with friends who have selected the same things.

Although Instagram has not shared any details about this feature, the company likely sees Picks as a way for users to connect more personally with friends and initiate conversations on shared topics.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said earlier this year that in 2025, the social network will focus on creativity and interaction. “To help people connect with friends about what they discover on Instagram, we’ll double down on messaging, make content consumption more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends,” Mosseri wrote in a January Instagram post.

Of course, not everyone will be happy with Picks, as it adds yet another feature to an already crowded app. Instagram faced negative reactions after launching Instagram Map, with many users saying they didn’t want the feature at all.

As with any other feature in development, it is unknown when or if Instagram plans to officially launch Picks.
