Instagram introduces AI tool for editing appearance and background in video

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri hints at the social app’s upcoming generative artificial intelligence features that will allow creators to “change almost any aspect” of their videos with text prompts. The editing tools will be powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, and are expected to launch on the social network next year, Mosseri said in a video posted on Thursday.

“We’re working on some really exciting AI tools for you video creators,” Mosseri said. “Many of you create the amazing content that makes Instagram what it is, and we want to give you more tools to help bring your ideas to life. And you should be able to do whatever you want with your videos. You should be able to change your outfit or change the context you’re sitting in or add a chain, anything you can think of,” he added.

The video demonstrates the AI editing capabilities that Mosseri teases, including the ability to change outfits, change background environments, add jewelry, and change your appearance in general.

For example, in one scene, Mosseri’s background changes to a snowy atmosphere, and in another, he transforms into a puppet, animated version of himself.

While the previews look clean and flawless, it’s unclear whether the custom editing tools will deliver the same results once launched.

When Meta unveiled Movie Gen in October, the company said that the model allows you to use simple text data to create video and sound, as well as to edit existing videos. At the time, Meta said that the AI video generator would not be publicly available. Today’s announcement shows that Meta will use this model to provide Instagram creators with more tools for editing AI videos.

It’s worth noting that Meta introduced Movie Gen a few months after OpenAI and Adobe debuted similar models. OpenAI’s Sora was launched for some users earlier this month, and Adobe started allowing some users to test its Firefly video generator in October.
