Huawei Nova 12 Ultra and Nova 12 Pro launched in China

Huawei has just announced a new series of Nova smartphones in its home market of China. The lineup consists of Nova 12, Nova 12 Lite, Nova 12 Pro, and Nova 12 Ultra. Now we will take a closer look at the older models of the Pro and Ultra series. So let’s take a look at their specifications, design, pricing, and more.

Huawei Nova 12 Ultra and Nova 12 Pro: Design and display

Nova 12 Ultra and Nova 12 Pro have a curved display on the front and the usual pill-shaped camera island on the back. The front and back have rounded corners and curved edges. Nova 12 Ultra weighs 198 grams, and Nova 12 Pro weighs 201 grams. Although both devices have the same width – only 7.68 mm.


From the front, Huawei equips Nova 12 Pro and Nova 12 Ultra with a tall 6.76-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and Full HD+ (2776 x 1224) resolution. The screen also has a pill-shaped camera notch that houses two front-facing image sensors. Notably, the Ultra model comes with Kunlus glass, which is claimed to be “shatterproof.”

Technical characteristics

The Nova 12 Ultra and 12 Pro are quite similar, but some of their differences include chipsets. The former is equipped with Kirin 9000SL, and the latter with Kirin 8000. These chipsets support 5G networks and are paired with 12 GB of RAM. The Pro model offers up to 512 GB of RAM, and the Ultra model up to 1 TB. Out of the box, the lineup runs on HarmonyOS 4.0 (HongMengOS in China).

Both phones are powered by a 4600 mAh battery that supports 100W wired fast charging. A notable feature of the Nova 12 Pro and Nova 12 Ultra is the support for satellite communication, which is a common feature for new high-end devices. Other features include an in-display fingerprint scanner, dual-SIM support, gesture navigation, face unlock, Bluetooth 5.2, AAC, SBC, and LDAC audio codecs.

Camera

The camera system is almost identical in both smartphones. On the back of Nova 12 Pro and Nova 12 Ultra is a 50-megapixel main camera, which works in conjunction with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and macro shooting. The main camera has a variable aperture that can be adjusted from f/1.4 to f/4.0. This allows for 2x optical and 5x digital zoom. Meanwhile, on the front is a 60-megapixel main ultra-wide-angle selfie camera and an 8-megapixel portrait camera. The wide-angle sensor has an f/2.4 aperture and autofocus support, while the portrait sensor has an f/2.2 aperture and also supports autofocus.

Price and availability

Huawei Nova 12 Ultra and Nova 12 Pro were announced in several color options, namely white, black, pink and blue for the Pro and black, blue and gray for the Ultra. They were also announced with two memory configurations. The Nova 12 Ultra has a starting price of 4,699 yuan (approximately $658) for the 512GB model, while the 1TB variant costs 5,499 yuan (approximately $769).


The Nova 12 Pro is priced at 3,999 yuan (approximately $560) for the 256GB model, while the 512GB model costs 4,399 yuan (approximately $615). Both models are currently available for pre-order, and the first sales of both devices will begin on the morning of January 12, 2024.
