The HongMeng operating system kernel technology developed by Huawei has received the industry’s first Evaluation Assurance Level 6 Augmented (EAL6+) certificate based on the Common Criteria methodology. This certificate confirms the highest possible level of security for general-purpose operating system kernels. Huawei became the first smart device manufacturer in the world to receive this certificate.
Operating system kernels are the foundation of its security and privacy. The Common Criteria (CC), also known as the ISO/IEC 15408 standard, is the most influential information security certificate in the global IT industry. CC is a widely used and recognized standard for assessing product security.
SGS Brightsight, a leading security assessment laboratory, performed the security assessment of the HongMeng kernel.
“We at SGS Brightsight, the world’s largest security assessment laboratory, are honored to have evaluated the Huawei HongMeng core and confirm that it meets the international Common Criteria standard at the EAL6+ level. We believe that the HongMeng core will become one of the most important foundations for building the future of Huawei’s IoT and mobile products. The CC EAL6+ level also demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to building secure products,” said Kai-Fan Chang, COO of SGS Brightsight Asia.
“The safety capabilities of the HongMeng core are now recognized by internationally accredited certification bodies. This confirms the highest level of kernel security and guarantees new security achievements in Huawei devices and ICT solutions,” said Gong Ti, President of Software Development at Huawei Consumer BG.
“Kernels are the foundation of system security and privacy. Huawei is committed to ensuring the security and privacy of both information and communication technologies and devices. The company will continue to adhere to established global standards for core software and cybersecurity. It will also ensure that the security capabilities of Huawei products continue to meet internationally recognized best practices,” commented Michael Lemke, Chief Security Officer at Huawei Germany.
The CC EAL6+ certificate marks a new level of industry recognition of Huawei’s high level of cybersecurity. As of today, Huawei has more than 500 cybersecurity assessment certificates, such as CC, FIPS, ISO 19790, PCI DSS, CSA STAR.
Huawei’s top priorities are cybersecurity and privacy protection. These are the obligations that the company puts above any commercial interests. Huawei’s significant achievements in the field of cybersecurity have been recognized in more than 170 global markets, where the company serves more than three billion people. Customer trust is the most convincing evidence of the security, quality of Huawei products and services.
Huawei firmly believes that openness and collaboration lead to overall success. The company actively engages with the ICT industry, collaborating with peers and industry stakeholders to share best practices. In 2022, Huawei submitted approximately 300 proposals for cybersecurity standards to the 3GPP mobile telephony specification development organization and the GSMA. Working hand-in-hand with stakeholders across the value chain, the company is jointly innovating to strengthen the industry’s cybersecurity and privacy protection capabilities.
