Huawei announces a tender for the development of AI in the 5G sphere

Huawei recently took part in the international AI for Good summit. This event is the UN’s leading platform for inclusive dialogue on the development of artificial intelligence in the fight against climate change. During the event, Huawei announced a competition for the development of machine learning models in the 5G field.

The summit offered a number of competitions designed to engage the general public in finding the best AI-based solutions. In particular, this applies to combating climate change. The competitions are held under the auspices of the United Nations, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and others.

Huawei is the curator of the 5G energy consumption modeling competition. It develops machine learning models that reduce the power consumption of base stations of any manufacturer. In the coming months, scientists around the world will work on innovative solutions in this area.

Team registration will run from now until September 30, 2023. The jury will evaluate the best solutions, which will be presented at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Dubai at the end of this year.

Xi Zheng, a researcher at Huawei’s Global Technical Service Department and the competition’s curator, said that the company hopes to “raise awareness of complex ICT issues, encourage researchers and experts around the world to contribute to the development of practical solutions, and show how AI capabilities can be used to solve real-world problems.”

The winners will receive cash prizes, as well as internship and cooperation opportunities with Huawei.

In addition to Huawei’s competition, the summit’s thematic subdivisions include food and climate-optimized agriculture, as well as water management.

“It is crucial to observe how the combination of AI-based solutions in the ICT sector can provide an effective algorithm for action on a global scale,” said Seizo Onoe, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau.

“The challenge announced today was supported by the global community of major players in the sector, including Huawei. It will help to find new ways for joint digital climate solutions,” said Thomas Basikolo, ITU Program Manager, ITU Coordinator and Manager for Machine Learning and 5G.

The fourth edition of the ITU AI and Machine Learning for 5G competition brought together participants from more than 100 countries, representatives of various fields and academia who are solving real-world problems by applying artificial intelligence and machine learning in communication networks.
