How to convert Starlink for autonomous power supply

Today, the Ukrainian military is widely using Starlink terminals at the front. To do this, they often need to power the satellite terminals from batteries. This requires appropriate POE injectors.

Thus, Nebograi not only repairs Starlink satellite communication terminals, but also offers appropriate injectors with the necessary characteristics and connects them correctly.

“For those who need it, good power supplies and injectors are made by Ukrainian guys from the team https://nebogray.com Not cheap, but they work as needed,” writes military communications expert Serhiy Flesh (Beskrestnov).

The expert points out the following problems:

  1. The POE injector is not a power supply. It is a unit for supplying voltage through a cable to the starlink. That is, the injector also needs a good power supply.
  2. The injector must hold the power. Starlink has a peak power of 130-140 watts. Therefore, cheap Chinese injectors are not suitable for this.

“I bought an injector on Ali. It withstood 70 watts. At 120 watts, it died instantly. In the photo, I disassembled it to see what’s inside,” Flesh writes.

Oleksandr Voznyuk-Kovalchuk points out in his commentary that Starlink uses an improved and modified POE++ standard for its needs.

“It is in order to transmit the necessary power without losses and all sorts of problems. So no ordinary standard PoE adapters will do,” he says.

The expert points out that a high-quality twisted-pair cable should be used; standard cables have improved cross-sections. The length is recommended up to 60 m. There are different input voltage options from 12 to 48 V.

And in no case should you connect from a cigarette lighter if you don’t want to get into trouble.

“Power should be supplied directly from the battery with a cable of the required cross-section, or from units that meet the requirements, but definitely not from a cigarette lighter,” adds Oleksandr.
