GlobalLogic, one of the largest IT companies in Ukraine, has researched how much time IT engineers spend on training, what sources of learning they use, and how the full-scale war has affected the learning process.
The survey involved almost 700 company specialists with different levels of experience. Namely: 245 Senior, 208 Middle, 121 Junior, 18 Trainee, and 49 project managers.
How much time do IT employees devote to training
The vast majority of engineers study regularly. For example, half of the surveyed IT professionals spend at least three hours a week on professional development.
What is the motivation to study?
The greatest motivation is the desire for self-development, as noted by 85% of respondents. Other motivations for studying include increasing income, career growth, the desire to remain a sought-after specialist, and training for the needs of a current project.
Tools for learning
IT professionals most often turn to specialized articles, blogs, and professional literature. Also, more than half of IT professionals choose training courses on portals (Coursera, UDEMY, Prometheus, etc.) and video tutorials on YouTube. Ukrainian engineers apply to IT schools less often.
Almost half of the respondents gained new knowledge through GlobalLogic Education, a platform that promotes the professional development of IT professionals and those planning to take the first step in IT. The company’s engineers have access to dozens of different trainings to improve their professional skills.
Since 2019, the group of companies has invested more than $6 million in the professional development and training of local specialists in the Central and Eastern Europe region. A significant portion of these investments is in engineering talent in Ukraine.
“Engineers continue to study even in a full-scale war. The survey shows that in wartime, 28% of respondents began to study even more. This proves the high motivation and resilience of Ukrainian engineers,” says Yevhen Sakalo, GlobalLogic’s university program manager.
In his opinion, continuous learning is an integral part of a successful and sought-after engineer. Therefore, IT companies need to help their colleagues develop.
