The code leak suggests that xAI is developing an advanced file editor for Grok with spreadsheet support, indicating the company’s desire to compete with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft by embedding copies of AI in productivity tools.
“You can talk to Grok and ask it to help you while editing files!” writes reverse engineer Nima Owji, who made the discovery public.
xAI has not disclosed its strategy for creating interactive, multimodal AI workspaces, but it has made a number of announcements that indicate the company is thinking about these tools. In April 2025, xAI launched Grok Studio, a split-screen workspace that allows users to collaborate with Grok to create documents, code, reports, and browser games. It also has the ability to create workspaces that allow you to organize files and conversations in one place.
While OpenAI and Microsoft have similar tools, Google’s Gemini workspace for spreadsheets, documents, and Gmail seems to be the most similar to what xAI is developing. Google’s tools allow you to edit documents and spreadsheets, as well as chat with Gemini while viewing or editing documents. The difference is that Gemini Workspace only works within Google’s own ecosystem.
It’s unclear what file types xAI’s editor can support besides spreadsheets, and whether xAI plans to create a full-fledged productivity suite that could compete with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
If Ouji’s findings are true, the improved editor will be a step toward Elon Musk’s ambition to turn X into an “everything app” that includes documents, chat, payments, and social media.
