Google's Gemini AI is coming to Android, starting with Pixel 8 Pro

Google has introduced its latest innovation in the Gemini large language model (LLM) with three different versions – Nano, Pro and Ultra. Each of them has its own unique features, and if you are interested, you can read all about them in our separate article.

Gemini Nano is Google’s smallest and most efficient AI model. This model is designed to run locally on your phone, and Pixel 8 Pro is the first smartphone to use it. Since Gemini Nano runs locally on the smartphone, users do not need to be connected to the Internet.

This local processing (for now) powers two new Pixel 8 Pro features:

  • Recording summaries: This feature allows you to automatically create concise summaries of audio recordings, increasing productivity and information retention.

  • Smart Reply in Gboard: This update offers contextually relevant replies in messaging apps, but it is currently limited to WhatsApp only. However, Google plans to expand this feature to other apps soon. According to Google, Smart Reply saves you time by offering high-quality replies that are both conversational and contextually relevant.

These features are part of the December Feature Drop, which also includes many other innovations (we’ll tell you about them in a separate article).

While the Tensor G3 chip currently has exclusive capabilities to run these AI features, they are currently limited to the Pixel 8 Pro. However, we expect it to become available on the standard Pixel 8 soon.

Similarly, Google is also working to extend the capabilities of Gemini Nano to the entire Android system. The company has launched a new system called AICore to help developers integrate Gemini-based features into their applications.

Although your phone will still need a powerful processor, Google confirms compatibility with processors from Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek. Developers can already join Google’s early access program.
