Google Drive gets searchable video transcriptions

Google has announced a new transcript search feature for videos you store on Google Drive. This feature will be available to all Google Workspace users starting today and until March 26.

Transcripts are very similar to what you see on YouTube. When available, they appear in the sidebar next to the video as blocks of timestamped text, with each block highlighted as it is spoken in the video you’re watching. The transcript search bar is located at the top of this sidebar, and clicking on specific text blocks will take you to that point in the video. You can view the transcript by clicking on the settings icon at the bottom of the video and then selecting Transcript.

The transcription option is only available if the video already has subtitles, as indicated by the CC button that appears in the controls at the bottom of the Google Drive video player. If the video doesn’t have subtitles, you can create them by right-clicking on the video in Drive, selecting Manage subtitle tracks, and then Generate automatic subtitles.
