Gmail summaries will now appear automatically

Google Workspace users will see much more of Gemini’s efforts to summarize their emails. Gmail now automatically creates summaries for complex topics, and they will appear above the emails themselves.

Artificial intelligence-based email summaries were introduced to Google Workspace accounts last year, but until now, they had to be triggered manually. Instead, Google’s AI will now decide when a summary might be useful and generate it without asking about “long email chains or messages with multiple replies.” Email summaries will be updated as new replies are received.

Automated summaries will now appear above English-language emails, but only on mobile devices, and it may take up to two weeks for them to appear in your account. Google hasn’t said whether this feature will apply to the desktop version of Gmail or to Gmail users without paid Workspace accounts.

If Gmail doesn’t generate AI summaries automatically, you can still ask it to create them as you’ve done before. And if you don’t want to see them at all, you can deactivate all of Gmail’s AI features by turning off Smart Features in the app’s settings.
