Firefox finally adds tab grouping feature

Firefox now lets you organize tabs. Four years after its biggest competitors launched tabbed browsing, Mozilla published a blog post of nearly 1000 words describing the feature’s long journey from user requests to launch. (If you don’t like long acceptance speeches, you can skip it.) “What happens when 4500 people ask for the same feature?” – the company asked rhetorically. “In Firefox, we create it.”

Of course, these users may have been asking for tabbed groups in part because Firefox was the only major browser that didn’t have them. Chrome, Safari, and Edge all launched tabbed browsing in 2021. Heck, Vivaldi has had them since 2016.

Delay aside, Firefox users will welcome the ability to organize their clutter. This feature allows you to drag and drop tabs into groups and label them by name or color. Mozilla says that tab groups are stored on the device and are never uploaded to the cloud. “Tab groups aren’t just about organizing,” says Firefox product manager Stefan Smagula. “It’s a way to re-establish your flow and regain focus.”

Next up, Firefox tabs: The tech industry’s favorite buzzword. Mozilla is testing AI-powered smart tab groups that suggest names and groups based on your open tabs.
