The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced the official launch of faster 25W Qi2 wireless charging, with the first devices already certified and “several hundred” to come. Most interestingly, the consortium promises that along with iPhone support, several “major Android smartphones” will finally adopt this standard.
We knew that faster Qi2 charging was coming, compared to the previous 15W limit, and accessory brands including Anker, Ugreen, and Baseus have received early certification, with some even announcing power banks and chargers. Until now, we only knew about this technology by its version number, Qi2.2, but WPC has confirmed that it will be known as Qi2 25W.
WPC confirmed that iPhones will support Qi2 25W, but did not say which models. Currently, the iPhone 16 series offers a charging speed of 15W with the Qi2 standard, but 25W with MagSafe technology. Since the Qi2 magnetic standard is partially based on Apple’s MagSafe design, it makes sense that the 16 series could receive an upgrade to the new standard, and it’s likely that future iPhone 17 models will support it as well.
The group also states that “mainstream Android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch,” although again, it does not provide any specifics. To date, only one Android phone fully supports Qi2 – the HMD Skyline. Several Samsung flagships, including the recent Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, are certified “Qi2 Ready”, meaning they support 15W Qi2 charging, but do not have the magnetic ring needed for full speed on their own, forcing owners to purchase a magnetic Qi2 case for full functionality. We asked WPC to comment on whether future Android support will be full Qi2 or just Qi2 Ready.
“The momentum behind the next phase in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible,” said Fadi Mishriki, Chairman of the Board of Directors at WPC. “Consumers will be thrilled to experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The number of devices in the queue for Qi2 25W certification is unprecedented, as is the quality and breadth of product design from our members.”
