EP supported the development of a digital wallet

The European Parliament has supported the creation of a legislative framework and a prototype of the EU wallet. Now, the member states of the consortium, including Ukraine, are obliged to launch their national EU wallets within 24 months.

As a reminder, Ukraine will participate in the development of a European digital wallet. Diia is a contender for the project, as the app performs most of the functions provided by the EUDI wallet. The high quality of the app has been recognized by European experts.

What is EUDI?

The EU Digital Identity Wallet is a mobile product that will allow you to securely store and share personal data electronically. It will operate both within its own country and abroad. It will have common standards and specifications for all EU countries.

To implement EUDI, the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium (EWC) was created. The EWC consists of representatives from all 27 EU member states and also includes partners from other countries, including Ukraine. This broad representation provides a unique opportunity to issue personal identification data (PID) for both individuals and legal entities.

Main services

As part of the pilot project, POTENTIAL will test 6 different types of services:

  • use of public services online;
  • convenient and secure online bank account opening;
  • constant access to driver’s licenses in your smartphone;
  • SIM card registration;
  • use of an electronic signature;
  • receiving electronic medical prescriptions.

After the introduction of the digital wallet, Ukrainians will be able to use Diia in Europe. And Europeans will be able to use their digital wallets in Ukraine.

POTENTIAL

In 2023, Ukraine joined the POTENTIAL consortium along with 18 EU member states. Together with European colleagues, Ukrainians have developed requirements for the European Wallet and scenarios for its use. They also shared their experience in implementing the Diia app, which had most of the functions provided by the EUDI wallet long before the European Commission’s proposal was presented. In particular, Ukrainians regularly use Diia to simplify their interaction with the state.

Ukraine is the only country in the consortium that is not currently a member of the EU, but is already actively working on the future of electronic identification in Europe. POTENTIAL participants have repeatedly noted Ukraine as a country that, despite the challenges of war, is making tangible progress in digitalization on its way to the EU.

Jointly led by France and Germany, POTENTIAL is one of four large-scale pilot projects selected by the Commission to experiment with digital identity across Europe.
