Elgato allows you to glue the Stream Deck to anything

At Computex, Elgato announced a new “Stream Deck Everywhere” strategy that includes a software-based virtual Stream Deck for PCs, an Ethernet docking station, unbranded Stream Deck modules that can be used in other products, and even new scissor keys for a more precise, keyboard-like feel. “With these launches, we are opening up Stream Deck to a world of new users, from developers and hobbyists to manufacturers looking for a field-proven interface for their products,” said Elgato CEO Julian Fest. “Because Stream Deck is not just a device, it’s a platform.

Stream Deck modules are designed for hobbyists and manufacturers to easily integrate into hardware projects instead of taking apart the consumer version or developing their own custom macro pad solutions. The modules are available in 6-, 15-, and 32-key versions and are housed in an aluminum enclosure that can be built into custom bases, machines, and furniture, allowing you to virtually create a ridiculous 1,262-key Elgato April Fool’s Day desk.

Stream Deck modules are available now for $49.99 for the six-key version, $129.99 for the 15-key version, and $199.99 for the 32-key version. Elgato’s technical marketing manager Philipp Eggebrecht told The Verge that discounts will be offered for bulk purchases.

According to Elgato, the new MK.2 Stream Deck replaces membrane keys with scissor-shaped switches that provide “increased speed and accuracy.” Eggebrecht says that the scissor-key variant costs $149.99 and will be available “in about two weeks.”

The Stream Deck’s buttons, which look more like keyboard keys, will help users realize they’ve pressed something without looking at the device. Elgato describes the scissor switch variant as “lending itself to typewriter-style interaction, paving the way for new use cases that benefit from fast, layered input and control,” which could be a game-changer for the Stream Deck keyboard or any other application that requires precise control.

“The idea of a full LCD-based keyboard is an interesting one. We’ve explored it in the past, and so far we’ve found that the experience hasn’t been great, and there’s the issue of cost,” Eggebrecht told The Verge. “We’re getting closer to the feel of a scissor-key keyboard with the Stream Deck, and we’re always looking at the technology and what’s possible. Stream Deck and keyboards are a natural fit.”

Elgato is also releasing a software version of Stream Deck for desktop devices, similar to the existing Stream Deck mobile app. The Virtual Stream Deck (VSD) can provide a permanent menu of macros on the computer screen or be invoked on demand when users press dedicated hotkeys and mouse buttons. VSD software will initially be available for users of the Corsair Scimitar Elite Wireless SE mouse, Xenon Edge touchscreen, or any Stream Deck model, and will be expanded to “other devices” later.

Custom layouts, virtual faceplates, and support for more than six buttons require iPhone and Android Stream Deck users to pay for Pro access, which starts at $2.99 monthly or $49.99 for a one-time purchase. Eggebrecht says that Elgato’s desktop VSD is not tied to a subscription, but requires users to install the beta version of Stream Deck 7.0.

A new $79.99 accessory for the Stream Deck network dock was also announced, which includes support for Power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing buttons to be placed anywhere there is a network connector and with more flexibility than USB-C alone. According to Eggebrecht, the Stream Deck network dock will be available in August.
