Chromecast is now showing the error “Unreliable device”

Reports are surfacing today that second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio music streaming devices are crashing, displaying an error on the device they are trying to stream from, which seems to mean that the streamers may no longer be supported, 9to5Google reports.

Text from screenshots of the error posted on Reddit reads: “Unreliable device” and goes on to say that the device ”could not be verified. This may be due to outdated device firmware.” Understandably, people are concerned that Google has decided to send the streaming washers, both quite old, to the Google graveyard.

As 9to5Google points out, the company hasn’t announced that it’s discontinuing them, as it did with the original Chromecast in 2023. At least one member of the Chromecast community claims that they contacted Google support and were told that the company is aware of the problem and is waiting for a solution. Google did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Google discontinued the Chromecast line last August, but said it still offers “ongoing software and security updates for the latest devices.” If we’re nearing the end of the line for the two devices affected today, it’ll be a bit of a bummer, especially when it comes to Chromecast Audio. There are better alternatives out there today, but none of them, I would say, have the same charm as Google’s little vinyl record-shaped music streamer.
