Since its public release a year ago, ChatGPT has taken the world by surprise by unleashing the potential of artificial intelligence on the general public. While OpenAI has been trending for all the wrong reasons lately following the firing of its CEO Sam Altman, its flagship product ChatGPT continues to introduce new features for its users.
ChatGPT has released voice chat support for its free users. Previously, this feature was available only for paid users of the service. Now, free ChatGPT users can directly communicate with artificial intelligence and have conversations in real time.
ChatGPT’s latest update introduced voice chat for free users. The feature is available in the official ChatGPT app for Android and iOS. It allows users to have one-on-one voice conversations with artificial intelligence, similar to a phone call.
To use this feature, users should click on the headphones icon in the ChatGPT app. You can choose one of five different voices that the program will use to respond to you. After you select a voice, ChatGPT will start talking to you as if you were a real person.
When we tested the voice chat feature in ChatGPT, we found it to be very realistic, as the program’s voice response sounds like you are actually talking to a real person. Compared to Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri, ChatGPT’s voice tone and modulation seem to be better and more realistic.
After the conversation is over, the voice chat can be closed and the user can continue to use the regular ChatGPT chat version. It should be noted that voice chats are only available in the Android and iOS apps and are not currently available on the website.
Voice chats were first introduced by ChatGPT in September 2023. However, back then, they were only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. So, this is good news for free users as OpenAI has removed the paid access to this feature.

However, users may experience some interruptions in accessing this feature as OpenAI is currently experiencing serious internal issues. More than 90% of OpenAI employees are threatening to leave the company, as it recently fired its founder and CEO Sam Altman.
Since then, there have been numerous discussions about how to save the world’s leading artificial intelligence company. The situation escalated so much that Microsoft had to intervene. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that they had hired Sam Altman and were also offering jobs to all OpenAI employees who wanted to leave the company.
Recently, the board of directors of OpenAI agreed to bring back Sam Altman as CEO. The company has already formed a new board of directors and will disclose details later. Altman has also officially confirmed this change and will return to OpenAI along with his partner Greg Brockman and all other employees.
