ChatGPT on the way to 700 million users per week

The impressive growth of ChatGPT as a consumer app continues as the chatbot will hit the 700 million weekly active users mark this week, the company reports.

Previously, the app reached 500 million weekly active users as of the end of March, Nick Turley, OpenAI’s vice president and head of ChatGPT, said in a post on X. He also said that the app has grown 4 times since last year.

“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating and solving more and more complex problems. A big week is ahead. I’m grateful to the team for making ChatGPT even more useful and fulfilling our mission to ensure that everyone can benefit from artificial intelligence,” he wrote.

The program’s popularity grew after OpenAI launched an updated image generation feature based on the GPT-4 model in March. In early April, the company’s COO Brad Lightcap said that more than 130 million users had created more than 700 million images in just a few days after the launch.

The company also saw an increase in the number of subscribers. Last week, Lightcap reported that ChatGPT has 5 million paid business users, up from 3 million in June.

In a recent report, market research company Sensor Tower noted that users use ChatGPT on average more than 12 days a month, second only to Google and X. The report also states that in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes per day on the app.
