Rumors of foldable devices that Apple may or may not produce have been circulating for years, from clamshell iPhone prototypes to plans for a foldable iPad, but recent reports suggest that we may be in for something much bigger. As Mark Gurman reported in this weekend’s Power On newsletter, Apple is developing a foldable device with a display that opens up to nearly 20 inches. According to Gurman, it will be “sort of like a giant iPad that folds out to the size of two iPad Pros standing side by side,” with elements of both iPad and Mac functionality. The company reportedly plans to release the device in 2028.
Not only will the device be huge, but Apple is also working to make it crease-free when opened, according to Gourmet, something other companies have failed to do with their foldable devices. He writes that Apple’s prototypes “have an almost invisible crease,” but it hasn’t completely disappeared yet. The report comes about a week after information leaked about a similar device with an 18.8-inch display, which is supposedly due out between 2028 and 2030. Gurman predicts that the foldable tablet will run on “iPadOS or a variant of it.”
