Apple suspends AI news notifications in the latest iOS beta

There will be significant changes to Apple Intelligence notification summaries. In the latest developer preview list for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple has suspended the system’s summary notifications, particularly from news and entertainment apps, while it works to improve alerts.

The company has also added a new disclosure that appears when users first turn on summary notifications. It states that the notifications are in beta and that they may lead to unexpected results. Separately, the beta version adds a new option that allows users to decide on the lock screen whether they want notifications from apps to be summarized. Finally, notifications generated by artificial intelligence use italicized text to further distinguish them from those that are not summarized.

Last week, Apple announced that it is working on updating notification summaries. “Apple Intelligence features are in beta, and we are constantly improving them with the help of user feedback,” Apple said. “A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text displayed is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report concerns if they see an unexpected notification summary.”

Notification summaries are one of the features that came with the first release of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Shortly after the feature became available to regular users, it quickly led to negative press for Apple. In particular, the BBC published several reports accusing Apple of spreading disinformation. One particularly disappointing example was a brief report that Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.
