Anthropic has introduced new weekly limits for its Claude Code tool to help AIs with coding tasks. This comes shortly after the AI company quietly started implementing restrictions on the use of Claude Code, which is the agent part of an AI chatbot capable of reading code, editing files, running tests, and pushing commits to GitHub.
According to a series of Anthropic posts on X, these changes were a response to complaints from some users who used Claude Code “continuously in the background, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 7 days a week.” This not only causes significant environmental damage, but is also financially costly for Anthropic. In addition, the company questioned that some users violate the terms of service by sharing or reselling accounts.
Claude Code is only available on Anthropic’s Pro and Max plans, the most expensive of which costs $200 per month. These subscriptions will start to see the weekly rate restrictions starting in August. “We estimate that they will affect less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage,” the company said. For those who do encounter the limitations of the Max plan, there will be an opportunity to purchase additional usage at standard API rates.
