Adobe releases Arm-based version of Premiere Pro for Windows

This week, Adobe is finally releasing Windows on Arm versions of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and Media Encoder. All four programs are available as public betas, but they lack some features or have some known issues compared to the versions available for Intel-based systems.

The native version of Premiere Pro for ARM64 does not currently include support for third-party extensions, raw video files such as ProRes, or hardware acceleration of H.264 and HEVC playback and export to MP4. These are some of the important features that are missing and Adobe hopes to make them available in a future release, but the company will not provide the Loudness Radar effect, export to Wraptor DCP, import and export GoPro CineForm content, or export to P2 Movie format in the beta or final version of Premiere Pro for Windows on Arm.

Adobe After Effects for Windows on Arm also has some known issues. It also lacks support for ProRes, as well as the inability to import or export ARRIRAW, SWF, GoPro CinePro, JPEG20000 in MXF and WMV format. Currently, the beta version of After Effects cannot import MotionJPEG and MKV, and there is no hardware acceleration for H.264 and HEVC playback and export to MP4. Adobe notes that third-party plug-ins for After Effects will need to be updated for this version of Windows on Arm, so they are not supported for now.

Similar features are not available in the native version of Audition and Media Encoder for Windows on Arm, which are also available in the beta this week.

Adobe first released a beta version of Photoshop for Windows on Arm in late 2020, but it took the company much longer to recompile Premiere Pro and After Effects for ARM64. For the past year, owners of Qualcomm-based Copilot Plus computers have had to use an emulated version of Premiere Pro that did not have enough performance for more demanding video editing tasks.
