Apple’s upcoming smart home hub, codenamed HomeView, is reportedly being developed with the capability to function as a HomeKit Secure Video camera. This feature, discovered within the localized settings files of HomeView Software version 27.2 by a leaker named pdfu, suggests Apple is looking to enhance the security and monitoring aspects of its smart home ecosystem.

HomeView’s Potential as a Security Camera

The unearthed configuration files indicate that the HomeView screen itself could house a camera, enabling users to monitor their home environment. If enabled, family members would gain the ability to view live feeds or recorded footage directly from the device. This would position HomeView not just as a central controller for smart home devices but also as an active participant in home security.

Flexible Monitoring Options

HomeView appears to offer a range of monitoring states, providing users with flexibility and control over their privacy and security:

  • Off: In this mode, HomeView would not detect motion, record video, or provide live streaming capabilities. This ensures maximum privacy when monitoring is not needed.
  • Detect Activity: This setting allows the device to detect motion and send notifications to the user. However, it would not record any video or permit live streaming, acting as a passive alert system.
  • Live Stream: With this option enabled, family members can view the real-time feed from the camera. While live viewing is active, the device will not automatically record footage.
  • Live Stream and Record: This is the most comprehensive mode, enabling both live streaming and automatic video recording. Users can access live feeds at any time and also review previously recorded video clips.

Scheduled Operation

Further enhancing its utility, HomeView will allow users to schedule the camera’s operation based on their presence at home. For instance, users could configure the camera to stop recording or disable live streaming when people are detected inside the house, and only activate these features when the home is empty. This intelligent scheduling could offer a balance between continuous security and personal privacy.

Development Status and Release

It’s important to note that this functionality is currently under testing by Apple. The discovery of these settings within a software build suggests that the feature is in active development, but its immediate release is unlikely. Apple often tests features extensively before rolling them out to the public, and the exact launch date for HomeView, especially with this camera functionality, remains unconfirmed.

The integration of HomeKit Secure Video capabilities into a central smart home hub like HomeView would represent a significant step for Apple in the competitive smart home market. It could offer a more streamlined and integrated security solution for users already invested in the Apple ecosystem, potentially reducing the need for separate security cameras.
