With the official release of iOS 27.2, Apple has introduced long-awaited stylus support for its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. The company has also published detailed documentation outlining the setup and usage process for the Apple Pencil.
Compatibility and Connection
According to Apple’s announcement, the iPhone Duo exclusively supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C) model. Other stylus versions, including the first and second-generation Apple Pencils, are not compatible with the new device.
To connect the Apple Pencil (USB-C) to the iPhone Duo, users will need to use a USB-C cable. The pairing process is as follows:
- Pairing the Apple Pencil: Navigate to iPhone Duo’s settings and select the “Tap to Connect” option. Once the Apple Pencil is successfully paired, it can be disconnected from the USB-C cable.
The stylus will remain connected to the iPhone Duo until the device is restarted, Bluetooth is turned off, or the Apple Pencil is paired with another gadget. If re-connection is necessary, the pairing procedure must be repeated.
Charging the Apple Pencil
The Apple Pencil (USB-C) charges directly while connected to the iPhone Duo. This convenient solution ensures the stylus is always ready for use.
Using Apple Pencil on iPhone Duo
The Apple Pencil unlocks new possibilities for iPhone Duo users, particularly within apps like “Notes” and “Freeform”, as well as in applications that support the “Markup” function (e.g., “Photos”).
When drawing or taking quick notes, users can utilize the tilt of the Apple Pencil to create shading effects or adjust line thickness, depending on the selected tool.
Management and Monitoring
Users can monitor the Apple Pencil’s battery level through the system’s “Battery” widget. Additional settings and parameters for the stylus are available in the “Apple Pencil” tab within the “Settings” menu.
Development History
Interestingly, rumors previously surfaced about Apple developing an exclusive, shorter version of the Apple Pencil specifically for the iPhone Duo, which was intended to attach to the device’s body. However, for reasons unknown, this product was never released.
The new Apple Pencil (USB-C) support feature on the iPhone Duo significantly expands the device’s functionality, transforming it into a powerful tool for creativity and productivity.
