Apple is celebrating a significant milestone for one of its most iconic products: the 25th anniversary of the original iPod. To mark the occasion, the company has hidden a delightful and fully interactive Easter egg on the Apple Music webpage.
A Walk Down Memory Lane with the Virtual iPod
Published by AppleInsider on October 23rd, the report details how users can stumble upon a playable, virtual replica of the first-generation iPod. The interactive experience is triggered by navigating to a non-existent page on the Apple Music website. For instance, visiting a URL like https://music.apple.com/cn/ithome will present users with the classic device.
The original iPod, launched by Apple on October 23, 2001, and released on November 10, 2001, revolutionized personal music consumption. Its core promise, “1000 songs in your pocket,” combined a high-capacity hard drive, intuitive operation, and seamless iTunes synchronization. This device was pivotal in Apple’s transformation from a computer company into a major player in consumer electronics and the digital music ecosystem.
Technological Leap Forward
In 2001, most MP3 players were hampered by small storage capacities, slow transfer speeds, and cumbersome interfaces. The first-generation iPod broke these barriers by offering 5GB of storage on a tiny 1.8-inch hard drive. Its integration with FireWire technology enabled blistering transfer speeds, allowing users to sync 1000 songs in under 10 minutes, with individual songs transferring in less than 10 seconds. Apple claimed this was approximately 30 times faster than USB players available at the time.
An Easter Egg Within an Easter Egg
This virtual iPod is far from a static image. Users can engage with the iconic Click Wheel using their mouse, navigating through menus, browsing song lists, and even listening to 90-second snippets of various songs. But the surprises don’t end there.
Apple has included a secondary Easter egg: within the virtual iPod’s Settings menu, under About, users can find a hidden treat. By long-pressing the center button of the Click Wheel, players can access and play the classic game Breakout. This nod to gaming history is particularly poignant, given the early involvement of Apple co-founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs with Atari, a precursor to some of the earliest video games.
Accessibility and How to Find It
It’s important to note that this nostalgic experience is currently only accessible through a web browser and cannot be found within the Apple Music application itself. To ensure you can access the virtual iPod and avoid being automatically redirected to the app, Mac users can hold down the Command key while clicking the relevant link. On iOS devices, users should long-press the link and select “Open” to access the browser-based experience.
This clever Easter egg serves as a charming tribute to the device that put music on the move and solidified Apple’s place in the pantheon of innovative technology companies.
