The global semiconductor silicon wafer market is poised for significant growth in the coming years, according to a new forecast from SEMI, the International Semiconductor Industry Association. The report predicts an 11.8% year-on-year increase in silicon wafer shipments in 2026, reaching a historical second-highest mark of 14.42 billion square inches. This figure is equivalent to 127.5 million 12-inch wafers.

Looking further ahead, SEMI anticipates that global silicon wafer shipments will surpass the previous high set in 2022. From 2027 to 2029, the industry is expected to continuously break its own records, culminating in an estimated 17.034 billion square inches (equivalent to 150.61 million 12-inch wafers) by the end of 2029.

Factors Driving Growth

The surge in demand for semiconductor silicon wafers this year has been largely propelled by the AI revolution. Advanced logic processes are driving the need for epitaxial wafers, while advanced memory processes are increasing the demand for polished wafers. Concurrently, the utilization rates in mature process industries have also shown signs of recovery, contributing to the overall positive outlook.

The semiconductor industry’s foundational component, silicon wafers, are experiencing robust demand, fueled by advancements in AI and the ongoing recovery across various manufacturing sectors. SEMI’s projections indicate a sustained period of growth, highlighting the critical role these wafers play in powering the next generation of technology. SEMI, October 21st Forecast Release.

Market Dynamics and Future Outlook

The semiconductor industry has navigated a dynamic landscape, with AI applications emerging as a primary catalyst for the current growth phase. The increasing complexity and computational demands of AI algorithms necessitate larger quantities of high-quality silicon wafers for both advanced logic and memory chips.

Epitaxial wafers, crucial for advanced logic processes that underpin powerful processors, are seeing expanded demand. Similarly, polished wafers, essential for the fabrication of high-density memory components, are also on the rise. This dual demand from cutting-edge segments of the semiconductor industry underscores the broad-based recovery and expansion occurring within the sector.

Furthermore, the resurgence in mature process industries signifies a broader economic upturn or increased demand for a wider range of semiconductor devices used in various applications beyond AI. This indicates a healthy and diverse market, rather than a single-sector driven boom.

SEMI’s Role in Industry Forecasting

SEMI, as a leading industry association, plays a vital role in providing critical data and analysis for the global semiconductor ecosystem. Its regular forecasts offer valuable insights to manufacturers, suppliers, and investors, enabling them to make informed strategic decisions. The association’s predictions are based on extensive data collection and analysis of market trends, capacity expansions, and technological advancements.

The optimistic outlook for silicon wafer shipments suggests a bright future for the semiconductor industry as a whole. As the demand for advanced electronics continues to grow across consumer, industrial, and enterprise sectors, the need for the fundamental building blocks of these technologies—silicon wafers—will remain strong. The industry’s ability to meet this demand will be crucial for continued innovation and technological progress.
