A significant unofficial advancement has been made for the PC version of FromSoftware’s acclaimed action RPG, Bloodborne. Thanks to a community-driven effort by developer Super Medo, the game, previously exclusive to the PlayStation 4, has achieved a remarkable performance milestone: over 220 frames per second at 1080p resolution on an NVIDIA RTX 4070 graphics card. This represents a performance leap of more than seven times compared to the original console experience.

The original Bloodborne, released in 2015, was known for its challenging gameplay and distinctive atmosphere but also suffered from performance issues, often struggling to maintain a stable 30 FPS on the PS4. This new unofficial PC port, however, leverages NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 Frame Generation technology to dramatically enhance the fluidity of the game.

Performance Benchmarks

According to testing conducted by MxBenchmarkPC, the RTX 4070 delivers impressive results across different settings. At native 4K resolution with DLAA enabled, the port averages around 40 FPS. When DLSS 3 Frame Generation is activated:

  • Quality mode boosts the frame rate to over 100 FPS.
  • Performance mode stabilizes the experience at approximately 130 FPS.

The most dramatic improvement is seen at 1080p resolution. With frame generation enabled, the game consistently reaches around 220 FPS, providing a level of smoothness far exceeding anything seen on the original console. This makes the classic “Souls-like” title incredibly responsive and visually fluid on modern PC hardware.

Ray Tracing Experiments

Beyond raw performance, developers are also exploring visual enhancements, including path tracing. One project, utilizing RTX Remix, aims to reconstruct lighting, shadows, and reflections. This involves converting static scene geometry to a native format and reading dynamic geometry in real-time from shadPS4. Early demonstrations in areas like the Hunter’s Dream and Yharnam Central show a noticeable shift in visual atmosphere, with more realistic lighting effects.

However, this ray tracing initiative is still in its nascent stages as a proof of concept. It currently exhibits visual artifacts and performance drawbacks. The developer has explicitly stated that this is not part of a formal release plan and a publicly usable version is not expected in the near future.

Community Efforts and Future Potential

This unofficial PC port highlights the dedication of the gaming community in bringing beloved titles to new platforms and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. While official ports or remasters of Bloodborne remain elusive, these community projects offer players a chance to experience classic games with modern enhancements. The performance gains and ongoing visual experiments suggest a vibrant future for preserving and improving older titles on PC.
