Apple is reportedly planning a futuristic upgrade for its smart home ambitions, with a new HomeView device potentially featuring a robotic arm. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman revealed in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter that the tech giant is considering a high-end smart home hub, codenamed J595, that could launch as early as 2027.

A Moving Display for an Interactive Experience

The standout feature of this upcoming device would be a motorized robotic arm. This arm is designed to rotate 360 degrees around the base of the hub and is expected to automatically pivot towards the person speaking, thanks to voice recognition technology. This would allow the device’s 9-inch screen to always face the user, creating a more engaging and personal interaction.

Not a Replacement, but an Evolution

Gurman clarified that this new device is not intended as a direct successor to the current HomeView. Instead, it’s envisioned as a more premium offering, positioned above the existing model. While the final product name is yet to be decided, Apple might opt for a new moniker altogether or simply append suffixes like ‘Max’ or ‘Ultra’ to the HomeView name.

Robotics in Apple’s DNA

This isn’t the first time Apple has explored integrating robotics into its consumer products. Rumors from 2024 suggested that Apple might leverage its automotive project’s robotics technology for home applications. Further reports in August 2024 indicated that Apple was developing a home robot, conceptually similar to an iPad attached to a robotic arm. The potential inclusion of a robotic arm in a HomeView device aligns with these previous speculations, suggesting a long-term strategy to infuse robotics into Apple’s ecosystem.

The Future of Smart Home Interaction

The concept of a smart home hub with a dynamic, movable display presents an intriguing evolution in how we interact with our connected homes. By enabling the device to actively orient itself towards users, Apple could significantly enhance the usability and intuitiveness of its smart home platform. This move could also signal Apple’s intent to further differentiate its smart home offerings in an increasingly competitive market, focusing on advanced features and a premium user experience.

While a 2027 release date is still some way off, and plans can always change in product development, the prospect of a HomeView hub with a robotic arm paints an exciting picture of what’s to come in the smart home space. It underscores Apple’s continued investment in pushing the boundaries of consumer technology and integrating sophisticated features into everyday devices.
