JetBrains has announced a significant update for its local AI programming tool, Junie Local. The tool now boasts Day 0 support for NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, and its Windows system support has moved from an experimental phase to a stable release.

Local AI Power for Developers

Junie Local is designed to empower developers by allowing AI to read code, modify files, and run tests directly on their local machines. A key advantage highlighted by JetBrains is that the tool requires no registration or subscription, incurs no token fees, and has no usage quotas. Crucially, all code processed by Junie Local remains on the user’s local system, addressing privacy and security concerns prevalent with cloud-based AI tools.

Performance Boost on RTX Spark

Initial performance tests on the NVIDIA RTX Spark platform show impressive results, with Junie Local achieving generation speeds of up to 55 tokens per second. This capability allows for rapid AI-assisted coding, making the development process more efficient.

Expanded Hardware Compatibility

JetBrains has also broadened the hardware requirements for running Junie Local. In addition to RTX Spark devices, the tool can now operate on computers equipped with RTX graphics cards featuring at least 24GB of VRAM and based on the Ampere or newer architecture. This includes popular cards like the RTX 3090, RTX 4090, and the RTX 5090 with 32GB of VRAM.

System requirements include Windows 11 with the corresponding architecture, NVIDIA drivers version 581 or later, and approximately 20GB of free disk space.

Streamlined Installation and Configuration

The new installer for Junie Local automates several setup processes. It automatically checks for compatible graphics cards and drivers, deploys the necessary AI models, and adjusts the context capacity based on available GPU memory. This intelligent adjustment ensures that the AI can retain as much code and conversation history as possible, leading to more coherent and context-aware assistance.

Users can choose between the Qwen3.6-27B model or a fused model provided by JetBrains. This flexibility allows developers to select the AI model that best suits their workflow and performance needs.

The Rise of Local AI Development Tools

The advancement of Junie Local signifies a growing trend towards local, on-device AI solutions for software development. As AI models become more efficient and hardware capabilities increase, tools that offer enhanced privacy, security, and speed without relying on cloud infrastructure are becoming increasingly attractive to developers. JetBrains’ commitment to this space with Junie Local positions it as a key player in the future of AI-assisted programming.
