Apple’s highly anticipated smart home hub, reportedly named “HomeView,” is set to be unveiled at the “Welcome Home” event on October 13th, with shipments expected in November. This information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest “Power On” newsletter.
Aesthetic and Design
The HomeView is described as having a design reminiscent of the iMac G4, often called the “lamp computer.” It will feature a suspended screen above a speaker base, giving it a unique and potentially stylish appearance in home environments. The device is expected to run on the A18 chip, indicating a focus on performance and advanced features.
Color Options and Mounting
Apple plans to offer the HomeView in four distinct colors: Space Gray, Silver, Starlight, and Pink. For users who prefer a cleaner aesthetic or have specific installation needs, a wall-mounted version will also be available. However, the wall-mounted variant will be limited to two color options: Space Gray and Silver.
Core Functionality and AI Integration
Gurman suggests that the primary interaction method for the HomeView will be voice commands, with an emphasis on an AI-powered Siri. This suggests that Apple is looking to significantly enhance Siri’s capabilities for smart home control and general assistance. The device will allow users to view screen content from across the room, implying a strong visual component to its interface.
App Ecosystem and Limitations
The HomeView will run native Apple applications. Notably, it will not support the App Store, meaning users will be limited to the applications Apple pre-installs or natively supports. However, there might be a way for users to project widgets from third-party iPhone applications onto the HomeView’s screen, offering a degree of customization and integration with existing app ecosystems.
Event Details
The “Welcome Home” event, where the HomeView is expected to make its debut, is scheduled for October 13th. This event could signal a new direction for Apple in the smart home market, a space that has seen increasing competition from companies like Amazon and Google.
