Huawei is facing significant cost increases for its smartphones, driven by a substantial rise in memory component prices. According to Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, memory costs have surged to the point where they add over $200 to the production cost of each smartphone. This particularly impacts Huawei devices, which typically feature larger memory capacities.

Industry-Wide Challenges

“This is a huge challenge for the entire industry. We are seeing many smartphone manufacturers raising their prices,” stated Richard Yu during an international press conference on September 29. He explained that Huawei had strived to maintain existing prices for as long as possible, absorbing some of the increased expenses internally to shield consumers. However, the company’s profit margins have significantly diminished, making it unsustainable to continue without price adjustments.

“Frankly, our overall profit margin is falling rapidly. If we operate at a loss, our business cannot survive. The company must, first and foremost, be able to exist,” Richard Yu elaborated.

Market Impact and Huawei’s Strategy

The increasing cost of smartphone components, leading to higher retail prices, is expected to place greater pressure on the budget segment of the market. This, in turn, may prompt manufacturers to shift their focus towards the mid-range and premium segments.

Huawei remains confident in its standing within the higher price tiers. “The premium market is where Huawei is strong. We are confident that we can continue to participate in this cycle of rising smartphone prices, and we will continue to offer consumers more innovative products, experiences, and services,” Yu asserted.

Potential European Market Re-engagement

Furthermore, Richard Yu addressed Huawei’s smartphone sales in Europe. He noted that mobile devices in these markets are predominantly sold through telecommunications operators. To boost sales volumes in certain developed countries, Huawei is considering re-engaging with the channel of reselling through telecommunication companies.

These shifts in component pricing and potential adjustments to sales strategies underscore the dynamic nature of the modern technology sector and the continuous adaptation required by companies to navigate evolving market realities.
