Japan’s popular yakiniku (Japanese barbecue) chain, Yakiniku King, operated by Monogatari Corporation, has disclosed a significant data breach impacting its membership system. On October 5th, the company announced that an unauthorized third party gained illegal access to the membership management system of the Yakiniku King official app, resulting in the exposure of over 10 million customer records.
Massive Data Exposure
The breach affected a staggering 10,788,963 members, nearly the entire registered user base of 10,808,784. According to the announcement, the compromised information includes member numbers, names (as registered in the app), email addresses, and phone numbers. Crucially, the company stated that sensitive details such as login passwords, dates of birth, gender, postal codes, and points held by members were not leaked.
Timeline of the Incident
The unauthorized access was first detected on October 2nd. Monogatari Corporation acted swiftly by disabling communications and implementing defensive measures. However, by the following day, October 3rd, the extent of the member information leak was confirmed.
Investigation and Remediation
Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that the leaked data has been misused. The company has confirmed that the incident stemmed from unauthorized third-party access and is continuing to investigate the root cause of the breach. Yakiniku King has assured customers that its official app will continue to operate normally after implementing enhanced measures to prevent external unauthorized access. Other official apps from Monogatari Corporation’s brands have also undergone similar security reviews, and no related leaks or incidents have been detected in those systems.
